Delivering long term value in Portugal

Lowering Cost and Environmental Impact

Artlant produce up to 700,000 te of PTA per year at their plant in Sines, Portugal. Veolia successfully won an international competition to design, build and operate a supporting utilities production plant which was designated to be of national interest.

The Challenge

Artlant is a major producer of preforms for the PET container industry as well as a PET seller. The Sines site, second largest in Europe, produces 700 000 tons/year of PTA, which is used as raw material for PET (polyester) production.Among the objectives during the construction of this nationally significant facility were strong protection for the environment and so Artlant chose Veolia to design, build and operate a utilities production plant (vapor, electricity, demineralized water, industrial gas, effluent treatment) because of the clear expertise and in-house specialists available to ensure project delivery.

Veolia’s Solution

Veolia’s offer was optimized to limit environmental impacts, in particular by installing an anaerobic effluent treatment process in order to reduce the volume of waste and recover the biogas, which was used to feed a boiler producing high pressure steam required by the site.
Veolia also provided environmental guidance in respect of  chemical industry compliance.
The utility facility is operated by 25 local staff who were trained in similar facilities managed by Veolia.Veolia managed the whole project with a unique team able to deliver the entire solution, including operation.

700 ktons/year of PTA produced by the plant

4800m3 of anaerobic digestion capacity

70 ton COD/day and 6000 m3/day of treatment capacity

Focus on water treatment: Technologies used to treat water:

  • Heat exchangers
  • Anaerobic treatment with Biobed® EGSB (Expanded Granular Sludge Bed) technology (Biothane)
  • Activated sludge
  • Clarification by Clariflo®
  • Sludge dewatering with centrifuge

The benefits for our client

  • Cost reduction: the Veolia solution reduces energy costs by 25% making the Sines site a technological reference point within its sector
  • Reduced environmental impact
  • Flexible organization to adapt to client needs as they evolve.
